Life does not always go to plan.

But whatever the situation, from a legal point of view, my clients know that they can rely on me as their solicitor to personally deal with the issue for them and to always protect their interests.

Quite simply, my priority is to find a legal solution that provides the best possible outcome for you, your family and your business.

A lifetime of experience

I am proud to say that I have been advising and representing my clients in the Borders and beyond for almost 30 years.

Originally from Glasgow, the Scottish Borders is very much home to me and the place where I would properly begin my legal career as a young solicitor in the early nineties. After studying Law at Strathclyde University and completing my traineeship in Glasgow, I joined Cullen and Kilshaw in the Borders before going on to manage Ketchen and Stevens’ Galashiels office.

This invaluable experience in all aspects of the law would lead me to becoming a full partner in Bannerman Burke for the past 22 years, a role which saw me specialising as a busy court lawyer in all aspects of litigation, as well as helping to jointly run one of the largest full-service legal firms in the region. Running a local business made me very aware of the areas of practice where provision was not adequate for local businesses and individuals. As demand for business and commercial law continued to grow, I realised that there was a need to develop this aspect of the firm, and in particular, for handling specialist employment law and HR matters.

Seven years ago, I launched sister firm Borders Employment Law, providing employers with a specialist legal service which is dedicated to law in the workplace. Demand from the business community has been such that I now represent and advise a significant number of business clients both here in the Borders and in many other parts of the country. It was always my long-term goal to grow this specialist legal service independently and I will continue to operate Borders Employment Law in tandem with newly formed Burke Legal. Employment law for individuals will be an important part of my new practice as recent years have shown there is a significant need for those services locally too.

I have previously supported my professional colleagues as a former member of the Council of the Law Society for the Borders and was Convener of the Law Society Equality and Diversity Committee for two years. I am also a convener of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland which sees me sitting with colleagues from diverse backgrounds in psychiatry, social work and wider mental health care services, to deal with cases brought before the Tribunal. I have also become established as a representative in the Employment Tribunal throughout Scotland and this specialist representation is also used by my network of legal colleagues across the country, who I regularly work with on a collaborative basis. My clients gain an advantage from this too, as the network I have means that any legal problem that is brought to me can be effectively dealt with.
